We are a diversified family farm involving Ralph and Liz Retzlaff and sons Leonard, his wife Michelle, and Luke and his wife Amanada. Together we raise cereal grains, canola, pedigree alfalfa seed and, leafcutter bees in addition to hay and forage for cattle feed.
Our herd consists of approximately 200 commercial cows, around 80 purebred Charolais cows, and we background about 400 char cross calves in our feedlot.
Each year we sell purebred Charolais bulls at the Saddleridge Charolais Bull Sale at Bow Slope Shipping in Brooks, Alberta. The bulls we sell are the kind of bulls we like to use on our commercial cows – producing calves that perform well in our feedlot and are easy to market to finishing lots. In our purebred program, we utilize both AI and embryo transfer so that we can access some of the latest and most productive genetics. We also diligently employ herd sires to walk with our herd that meet our goals of producing calves that are born easily and feed well.
