We are a diversified family farm involving Ralph and Liz Retzlaff along with our sons Leonard, Philip, and Luke and each of their families. Together we raise cereal grains, canola, pedigree alfalfa seed and, leafcutter bees in addition to hay and forage for cattle feed.
Our herd consists of approximately 350 commercial cows and around 100 purebred Charolais cows. We also have a backgrounding feedlot where we feed our own calves and custom feed about 2000 head.
Each year we sell purebred Charolais bulls at the Saddleridge Charolais Bull Sale at Bow Slope Shipping in Brooks, Alberta. The bulls we sell are the kind of bulls we like to use on our commercial cows – producing calves that perform well in our feedlot and are easy to market to finishing lots. In our purebred program, we utilize both AI and embryo transfer so that we can access some of the latest and most productive genetics. We also diligently employ herd sires to walk with our herd that meet our goals of producing calves that are born easily and feed well.
